TREATMENT:

For neurological issues requiring intensive or emergency care, the Mercy Neurological Institute of Greater Sacramento provides neurocritical care. Neurocritical care is intensive care devoted to critically ill neurological patients.

Our neurocritical care doctors assume a primary care role for their patients upon arriving in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Mercy Hospital and not only coordinate neurological care, but also provide general medical management of the patient. The neurocritical care doctor takes on the responsibility of various ICU specialists, providing cardiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, pulmonary medicine and other support to the patient's case.

The neurocritical care doctor will also provide neurological monitoring, such as ICP, electromyography and EEG, and will help work closely with neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, neurologists, emergency medicine and other medical and surgical subspecialists, as well as with nurses and other care providers to coordinate the best possible care for the patient.

The ultimate goal of neurocritical care is to resuscitate and support the acutely ill neurological patient, minimize secondary neurological injury and medical complications and facilitate the patient's transition to a recovery environment.
